TWO 12 Super Onze - Hommage à Amadou Toumani Touré (ATT) 1992

Hey there, we are delighted to share another long time age cassette release by the legendary Takamba outfit Super Onze!

We were granted a cassette tape (K7) from the collection of Henriette Kuypers, widow of the legendary Ali Farka Touré. When in Bamako the capital of Mali, Ali and Henriette would go out to the K7 shop to dig for Takamba tapes, one of the inspirations for Ali Farka Toure’s repertoire. When he performed in the east of Mali, Super Onze used to support Ali Farka Touré’s performances over there.

This recording is a tribute to Amadou Toumani Touré, better known as ATT. As a 42-year-old army colonel, in March 1991, as nascent democratic movements proliferated across Africa, Colonel Touré intervened following weeks of street protests in Bamako against the harsh and unpopular regime of President Moussa Traoré. He arrested the president, halted the bloody crackdown against demonstrators, and established an interim government. Under his leadership the foundation was laid for new democratic institutions that would reshape the country for decades to come. So the people where glad, and there was food and some more prosperity. And Super Onze made this hommage, it was supported financially by a patron, Sjeho, he was living in Bamba, not far from the city of Boureme.

The performers on this cassette are Yehia Mballa Samaké on ngoni/kurbu and Douma Maiga on pumpkin gourd /calabash/percussion)

Justin Adams (UK) on Super 11

“At the first Festival of the Desert in 2000/2001 there were many musical revelations- Tinariwen’s trajectory has been well documented- but another very different group had a huge impact on me: Super Onze de Gao just played one rhythm, but what a rhythm ! Devastating and unlike anything I’ve heard. ... more
